Treating A Sinus Infection: Three Steps To Take To Stay Comfortable
Having a sinus infection can make you feel downright miserable. Pressure, headaches, and a runny nose can make going to work or school seem like an impossible task. However, there are some things you can do at home to help relieve the symptoms and remain comfortable until the sinus infection goes away. Use the following suggestions, along with the help of your doctor, to get over your sinus infection.
Use Steam
Steam can help open up your nasal passages and make you feel as though you are breathing a bit more clearly. Take a steamy shower without the exhaust fan in your bathroom on to reap the benefits of this treatment, or place a bowl of steaming water on a table and soak in the steam with your head under a towel. The towel will help prevent the steam from escaping. An added benefit is that the steam can make it easier to do a deep pore cleansing of your skin, so you can feel like you are giving yourself a home spa treatment.
Drink Hot Beverages
Just like the steam, hot beverages can help loosen mucous and open up your sinuses; this can relieve some of the pressure you are feeling in your head and sinus cavities. Hot tea and coffee can be ideal for helping to relieve symptoms, but consider decaffeinated drinks. This is particularly important if you are taking allergy or sinus medication, as the caffeine may interact with the medication you are taking. If you prefer to have a bit of caffeine in the morning, check with your doctor first.
Use Cold Compresses
If you are experiencing severe headaches, you may want to consider using cold compresses on your forehead. A cold, wet washcloth over the eyes and forehead can be an easy way to relieve sinus headache pain, and a cooling gel eye mask can also provide some relief. You can use this step after a steam bath or shower to relieve headache pain after opening up your sinuses. You'll want to lie down while using the compress to combat any feelings of dizziness you may be having as a result of the infection or a headache.
You may also want to check with your doctor about having allergy testing performed, particularly if you are prone to frequent sinus infections and headaches. You may be able to keep these infections to a minimum once you know which allergies you have and take steps to avoid those allergens.
